The managing directors of Townsend Mertz met while in the MBA program at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. With a shared passion for private equity, they began investing together after finishing the program in 2010. Their initial private equity vehicle was a venture capital fund (Resonant Venture Partners) that went on to achieve a top-decile return for their investors when Cisco acquired Duo Security for $2.4B. In addition to Resonant, the team had also been personally investing in commercial real estate since 2004. In 2018, with many of their venture investment partners looking to deploy capital, Jason and James created Townsend Mertz to institutionalize their real estate investment efforts.
